3M (Monthly Marriage Maintenance) has been one of those times of joy and encouragement for me over the past few years. This is an open opportunity for anyone at NFC to come and spend time with their spouse as we enjoy a meal, conversation around tables, and reflection together. I love the chance to be with my wife, Diane, in the context of a community of encouragement. This month we looked at some of the “one another” scriptures in the New Testament.
“Love one another” (multiple places)
“Honor one another above yourselves” – Romans 12:10
“Instruct one another” – Romans 15:14
“Build each other up” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Carry each other’s burdens” – Galatians 5:13
“Encourage one another” – Hebrews 10:25
It was good to consider how these (and at least 50 more) “one another” scriptures give wisdom to both our individual marriage and the interactions we have with other married couples. How might I encourage Diane? How might we together build up those around us who are in need of support? We sat with other couples, such as Jess and Russ Ragsdale, pictured here, and realized once again that we are not in this thing called marriage all alone. The Ragsdales and many others have been examples to us of how we might “instruct one another” as well as be real and honest about the reality that marriage takes intentionality, commitment, and regular attention. Volunteers such as Gary and Carol Hankins come and serve the meal. Childcare is provided for those with kids. Laughter, conversation, and gratefulness flow around the tables. Most important, we have time with our spouse to stop and give attention to what really matters—loving one another.
We will gather again in March if you would like to come and be a part—March 16, 6:30 p.m., NFC social hall, open to all.
Why do we do 3M? Because we really do need each other!
