When Students are in Crisis
One of the greatest gifts (and hardest challenges) youthworkers and pastors can give families is journeying with students who are in crisis. This often can leave the church leaders overwhelmed, not knowing how to be an effective resource. It is common for church leaders working with students to be out of their comfort zone when students experience abuse, self-harming behaviors, depression, running away, divorce in the home, failing school, suicidal thoughts, sex addictions, and the list goes on. This year’s conference will be designed to give youthworkers tools and resources to journey with students and their families who are experiencing difficult things.
When: November 1-3, 2013
Where: Hood River Inn, Oregon
Who: ALL NWYM youthworkers and those who hope to better connect youth with their local church.
What: A retreat for all youthworkers and those who care about ministry with young people throughout Northwest Yearly Meeting. This weekend is structured to have engaging material presented with a balance of time and space for renewing spirits. Whether you have a large youth group or no youth in your meeting, this will be an important resourceful time together.
Kristina (Kris) Kays, Doctor of Psychology, will be joining us this fall to share her thoughts around this important conversation. Kris comes with two decades of clinical psychology experience, years working with YoungLife, and has several years working in college mental health. She will talk about how to look for students in crisis, when to seek out more professional help, and why this work is so important to the work of the Church.
