Service of Worship in Memory of Hubert L. Thornburg, January 27, 2013, 1:30 p.m. at Newberg Friends Church.

Hubert LaVerne Thornburg was born the son of Leroy and Lural Wright Thornburg on 21 June 1921 in Byers, Kansas. Hubert’s mother died in child- birth when he was 11 years old. Four years later he left his family and moved to Booker, Texas, to help on his grandparents’ farm. In 1937, he enrolled in Friends Academy in Haviland, Kansas, to be near his girlfriend and later wife, Vivian Hickman. They were married in April 1941. In 1942, Hubert joined the Navy (Coast Guard) after having received a draft notice by the US Army, where he served on a patrol boat as cook in keeping with his Quaker views. Hubert and Vivian’s first daughter, Karen Sue, was born in 1943 in Biloxi Mississippi; their son Kent LuRoy was born in Brownville, Texas, in 1945; and their son Stanley LaVerne was born in Liberal, Kansas, in 1946. In 1948, Hubert and Vivian left the church they had been pastoring and moved to Newberg, Oregon, so Hubert could enroll in Pacific College (now George Fox University). In 1950, their second daughter, Cleta Vee, was born. In 1952, Hubert graduated from Pacific College and in the next year began teaching for Newberg School District until his retirement from teaching in 1978. During those years he continued his schooling and received two master’s degrees and a certificate in special education from Western Oregon Teachers College in Monmouth, Oregon.

In the late ’50s, Hubert, Vivian, and their children moved to a small farm in Dundee, Oregon. Hubert became a part-time farmer, where he built a house and barn, cared for cattle and a horse, and raised a fruit orchard. Twenty years later, Hubert and Vivian sold the farm and moved to Salem, Oregon, to resume pastoring, where they stayed for 11 years. After retiring from ministry, they moved to Newberg, where Hubert took up his hobby of carpentry and maintenance until he retired for the third time at the age of 85. Surviving and left to honor his life are: his wife of 71 years, Florence Vivian Hickman Thornburg of Newberg, Oregon; his children: Karen Sue Thornburg McCo- naughey of Dundee, Oregon; Kent LuRoy Thornburg of Portland, Oregon; Stanley LaVerne Thornburg of Newberg, Oregon; and Cleta Vee Thornburg Crisman of Tualatin, Oregon. Also surviving are Hubert’s brother, Paul Thorn- burg of Newberg; his sister, Elda Ann Thornburg Cox of Wichita, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. His parents, LeRoy and Lural; his brothers Lowell Thornburg and Herschel Thornburg; and his sister, Audrey Thornburg Gordon, preceded him in death.
