Leila Ralphs

Leila Mae Ralphs of Newberg died January 23, 2016. She was 97. She was born September 22, 1918, in Burke, South Dakota, to Ross and Luella Crisman. Leila graduated in 1936 from Gordon Nebraska High School with honors and was selected as a member of the National Honor Society. These years were interrupted with work so that another year of college could be gained. Teaching school was a lifetime desire and goal. Leila’s dream came true after two years of normal school and one of Bible school at Northwest Nazarene College with her diploma and a contract to teach school near Star, Idaho, in a one room school house.

In June of 1942, Leila married Robert E. Ralphs, who was studying for the ministry at Cascade College. Together they took their senior year of college in 1943. They began their married life in Idaho. After the birth of their daughter Joy, the ministry took them to Entiat, Washington; Liberal and Riverton, Kansas; Newport and Ontario, Oregon; and Emmett, Idaho. They were blessed with one more daughter (Sandra) and a son (Robert A.). She taught school after Robert went to 1st grade. They moved to Nampa, Idaho, in 1962, and she returned to college at NNC to get her BA degree. They moved to Sheridan, Oregon, in 1965, and she taught school there. She also taught in McMinnville and Sherwood. One of the highlights of her life was to make a trip to the Holy Lands with her brother Clynton Crisman and sister Jean Hanson. Bob and Leila retired to Friendsview Manor in 1985. She lived there until her death.

Survivors include daughter Sandra Voss (Byron), brothers Leo and Clynton Crisman, sister Jean Hanson; six grandchildren: Tim and Tad Voss, Darla Oglevie, Debra O’Leary, Dawnita Null and Douglas Oglevie; and seven great-grandchildren.

Leila was preceded in death by husband, Robert E.; daughter Joy Runge; son Robert A.; one brother, Iryl Crisman; and two sisters: Annabel Barnes and Peggy Cadd.

Memorial contributions may be made to Friendsview Retirement Community Residents Assistance Fund (1301 Fulton Street, Newberg, OR 97132).
